There is so much more to the BMW HP4 Race than a shiny brand badge and fancy paint job. Under the surface of this sleek, beautiful production superbike, you’ll find incredible engineering achievements, near-boundless power and technology on the bleeding edge of what you’ll find in a motorcycle. Recently, BMW Motorrad released a never-before-seen look at the incredible engineering that goes into each and every HP4 motorcycle. Read on to learn what makes this bike the wonder that it is.
To start, the fastest production bike to emerge from the BMW “manufactory” is made from a one-piece carbon-fiber frame that weighs just 17.2 pounds – almost 9 lbs. lighter than its aluminum counterpart – and is put together in a process that molds pivots, inserts and headset races in place without any drilling damaging the fiber itself. The wheels of the HP4 Race are made from a carbon-fiber composite with molded inserts just like the motorcycle’s frame.
The secret of a good trackbike is easy adjustment so every rider can find his perfect position. The HP4 Race rises to this challenge with an adjustable swingarm that can be altered in +/-1/32” increments. Ride height also is adjustable on the HP4 Race and even rearsets can be altered according to rider preference. Front and rear sprockets can be swapped out for that perfect final drive ratio.
Although engineering is the principal wow-factor of the BMW HP4 Race, it is packed with other really attractive features that are ultra-functional too. The inverted fork has titanium-nitride-coated inner tubes, with just over 5 inches of travel and brake calipers are nickel-plated with anti-friction coating. The bottom line is that the HP4 Race is a motorcycle that not only means business but delivers it too.
Just three mechanics work to assemble the three BMW HP4 bikes that leave the factory every day. Each man takes his own bike and assembles it over the course of one day from premade parts, doing all requisite testing and adjustments. When the bike is completed, a unique production number out of 750 is affixed to the yokes on a carbon fiber tag.
The final result is a 215-horsepower, 321-lb. motorcycle that is unlike anything else on the market.
